Creating custom path URLs in WordPress for any page using parents

For SEO and classification, performance marketers are often wanting to add "directory paths" to WordPress page URLs. Unfortunately, you can not just go edit the page path and add a directory or folder path to your URL.

This is an easy problem to solve, however! You will simply need to create a page for that path, redirecting the path alone to a logical place. For example, if we are setting up custom landing pages using the standard "pages" feature, we might want to set up a directory path so that we can easily identify visitors who entered through a landing page.

Please follow these instructions instead of using a WordPress plugin for custom URL path permalinks.

We do not advocate for the use of a permalinks plugin at this time, because the added weight and risk of plugins is not worth it.

Other plugins you already have set up, like AIOSEO, for example, may allow you to make this change all at once when you are creating the page. So, we have created our page for the path "/lp/" and below we are using AIOSEO to make sure that nobody actually lands on /lp/

Now that there is a page called "lp", you will be able to nest beneath it as a parent in WordPress:

We utilize a minimal landing page template for anything that has a URL containing /lp/, making it very easy to drop new landing pages into the site.
