GA4 - Our Approach to Google Analytics Projects

With any Quick Assist or other project we're on, first thing that happens is a ZappyAlignment discussion. This helps us make sure we're working on data and/or reports that are going to be used within your/your clients' organization.

We aim to accomplish those immediate goals first, and along the way we're checking for some key components to each GA4 setup that we like to see. Anything missing or not fully set up will be added to an ongoing recommendations log for prioritization. We've found this to be the best path forward when we help with GA4 implementations through Google Tag Manager (GTM) or other setups that come from WordPress, Shopify, Tealium, Segment, etc.

The key components we're checking for are:

  1. There are certain events that should just be collected, and other events that may need to be collected depending on your business. A high-level overview lives in the technical guides area, under Event Data Collection. We'll categorize what is and isn't being tracked, and consider custom attributes for your reporting needs.

  2. Collecting data from both the client-side and the server-side will be a requirement in the future -- so we are either helping folks with that now, or laying out a foundation of knowledge for the team.

  3. Consent mode will need to be activated in order to send data to advertising systems. More about this in a soon-to-be-written article.

  4. Last but not least, we want to make sure that key events are being defined in GA!
